| The Napo Wildlife Center on Añangu Lagoon is one of the best eco-lodges in the Amazon region of Ecuador. This eco-tourism project was made possible through the support of the Añangu Quichua community and the Tropical Nature Conservation System. One important aspect of this project is the protection of the virgin rainforest in Yasuní National Park, one of UNESCO’s biosphere reserves in Ecuador. | |
| Accommodations are in comfortable bungalows for 2 or 3 guests, with a private bath, warm water, 120 volt outlets, and mosquito nets. From the terrace or the observation tower, you can watch giant otters, caimans, capybaras, monkeys, and birds and listen to the screams of the howler monkeys. | |

Itinerary for 4 days/3 nights, Friday through Monday
Day 1:
Flight from Quito or Guayaquil across the East Andes to Coca. You will be transported from the airport to the marina and from there in a motorized canoe along the Rio Napo, the largest river in Ecuador’s Amazon region. After a 2 ½ – hour ride, you arrive at Añangu Lagoon, home of the Napo Wildlife Center. On a 1 ½ – hour canoe tour later on, you may be able to see howler monkeys, toucans, parrots, macaws, herons, and other birds. After dinner, you can watch the caiman crocodiles on the banks of the river. (-/BL/D)
Day 2:
Early in the morning you set out for “Parrot Rock,” about one hour away and a true highlight of your visit to this area. In the early morning hours, hundreds of parrots and parakeets congregate here around a natural mineral lick. (This excursion is dependent on the weather.) Later, you hike to the Quichua community of Añangu to participate in their family activities before hiking to another parrot mineral lick. You return to the lodge in late afternoon. (B/BL/D)
Day 3:
In the morning, you can climb the almost 120-foot canopy tower on Rio Napo, which offers a spectacular view across the treetops of the rainforest. You can also observe toucans, macaws, colorful tanagers, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, monk sakis, spider monkeys, or three-toed sloths up close and personal. After having lunch at the lodge, you can explore the exotic plant and wildlife on a hike through the rainforest. You may encounter various species of monkeys, such as the one-of-a-kind golden-mantled tamarin, iguanas, tortoises, frogs, ant colonies, toucans, macaws, parrots, manakin birds, and hummingbirds. Around the lagoon, you may be able to watch a family of giant otters catching fish. (B/L/D)
Day 4:
After breakfast, one last activity awaits. You return, by canoe, to the Rio Napo to look for giant otters, capuchin monkeys, and rare species of birds. Later in the day, a motorized canoe takes you back to Coca for your return flight to Quito or Guayaquil. (B/-/-)
